My journey into the Mac platform began in March 2004 when i decided to buy myself a 12″ Powerbook G4 DVI laptop. I have to say that it is the longest running machine I have ever had, lasting a grand total of 5 years. Actually it still works, the only thing not working is the power cord which decided to pack up last month.
So why did I keep a laptop for 5 years? Its simple really, I never felt the need to upgrade. Design wise the powerbook still looks current even after 5 years, and I have the latest OS X leopard operating system installed on it. I paid £1300 for this laptop which i agree is a lot of money, but its been worth it in the long run. I think PC users would never understand the relationship a Mac user has with his/her Mac.
So lets talk about upgrade, sure i added a few GB’s of harddisk and memory in those 5 years but that was it really. Being a PC user before buying a Mac i had to upgrade every 2-3 years and 3 years would be stretching it really. I my personal view a PC turns into a slow slug after a couple of years of use. This is mainly due to the Microsoft operating system becoming bloated as you add and delete software over the years. Plus there is something about the cheap plastic used to construct these machines that turn them into dirty grey boxes with color fade and stains everywhere.
Surely PC’s can be made to look beautiful and elegant. So why is it the PC makes don’t understand this concept of beauty with brains? I think this points to a wider problem with the technology sector. No PC company wants to innovate anymore all they want is to imitate. When I look at a Toshiba laptop it looks the same as a Dell laptop or an HP laptop or a Acer one. These companies don’t have any pride in their product they don’t care how it looks as long as its cheap to make and brings in lots of profit.
